Alex Patterson – Musical Director of Radcliffe Ladies Choir:

Alex Patterson was born in 1988 and grew up on a farm nestled in the Mourne
Mountains in the County Down countryside just outside Newcastle in Northern Ireland. He attended Down High School
and was a member of the chamber choir who premiered three of his early Christmas Carols in Down Cathedral, Downpatrick.
As a keen choral singer, Alex was also a member of the Ulster Youth Choir and Ulster Youth Chamber Choir, taking part
in several BBC concerts including the Last Night of the Proms in 2006. He is also an amateur organist and began playing
for his local parish church back in 2002, where he returns to play when he can.
Whilst studying at the University of Nottingham, Alex was an active figure in the bustling music department having
conducted various ensembles including Coro Sorelle and been a member of the university chamber choir, Viva Voce.
He was also the musical director for the university’s Gilbert & Sullivan Society, conducting their 2009 production
of Ruddigore and also the first musical director for the university’s multi award winning opera society, OpSoc,
and lead the society in their recent semi-staged production of Mozart’s The Magic Flute.
Now a university graduate, Alex continues to sing with St Barnabas Cathedral Choir, where he has been a tenor
choral scholar for three years and now also composer-in-residence. He has also written numerous works for local
ensembles including a reflective Lenten motet, Attende Domine for the East of England Singers and a commission
from Chris Burton for a Nunc Dimittis setting for the Radcliffe Male Voice Choir. In addition to motets for
liturgical use, Alex is also working on a solo oboe work for Rebecca Benstead entitled The Pleiades, a song cycle
for St Barnabas bass scholar, David Ireland.
Although continuing his studies in composition at Birmingham Conservatoire in the autumn, Alex will continue his
work at St Barnabas, and is absolutely thrilled to be working with the Radcliffe Ladies Choir for the
foreseeable future.
